Get Creative

by Lindsey on July 21, 2009

inspiration

Recently, I’ve really been enjoying this website: adsoftheworld.com - a self proclaimed “creative advertising archive and community.”  If you’re looking for a little bit of inspiration or something get your mind going I suggest browsing this site.  It contains an archive of ad campaigns from around the world, a blog and even a forum.   In addition, you can narrow your search by media, region, country or industry.  Need to get the ball rolling on an idea or a creative-break from all that work you’ve got piling up on your desk?  Take a look.  I should probably add that it’s also a lot of fun.

If you have yet to see the YouTube phenomenon of Dave Carroll’s song against United Airline, please take this as an opportunity to enjoy what might be a huge lesson of viral advertising.

Dave, a Canadian singer songwriter, was shocked when he witnessed a team of United Airlines employees handle his fragile guitar.  In fact, the entire plane watched as employees haphazardly tossed baggage into the plane.  Sure enough, Dave arrived at the baggage claim to find his $3,5000 guitar destroyed.  Dave then spent the better part of 9 months calling and filling out forms with hopes to receive some sort of compensation for his loss. He claims the process was so exhausting and vigorous that he, like most people fighting with United Airlines, gave up.  His experience inspired him to take action in a different direction, doing what he does best — sing about it!  Within a week posting his song on YouTube he received over 2 million hits.  That’s more than any paid commercial that United Airlines has produced!

United Airlines quickly responded to the YouTube video by paying off the amount on his claim.  David donated the money to a music foundation.  He is currently in line for a possible job opportunity writing songs for the airline company — this time in a positive light.

What’s Mine Is Yours

zipcar

Zipcar, Closet Infinite, Home for Swap — what do these 3 have in common? They all involve the concept of “sharing.”  With the economy being, err, not so great at the moment, people are turning to sites like these to save money on transportation, clothing and even vacations!

Zipcar is great if you live in the city or only need a car every now and then.  Closet Infinite is only available in Singapore as of now, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing things like it in the U.S.  Through Home for Swap you can exchange your home for someone else’s home in another part of the world!

Sure, when it comes to sites like these you have to read the fine print but they’re absolutley worth checking out.  Go ahead, take that drive, wear that outfit, plan that trip, with style…and at a fraction of the cost!

I actually just stumbled upon Social Mention today. Apparently it has been out for some time. It’s dubbed as a “real time search engine” to help with social media measurement. This tool searches through user-generated content across different types of social media such as blogs, microblogging services, comments, news, events, videos and bookmarks.

social mention

I believe it pulls from :

  • Google blog search
  • Twitter
  • Delicious
  • FriendFeed
  • Flickr
  • Digg
  • YouTube

It doesn’t appear to catch everything, but really, what does? I like the tab called “Hot Conversions.” This can show recent efforts completed by your team, for a large brand, or perhaps trends you should know are happening. The way it displays keywords is also valuable helping your clients track their brand, campaign or products throughout the web. Invaluable for a public relations team a crisis.

For clients who are looking to find out more about their return on your social media efforts, this is a great way to generate reports and share efforts. I’m going to try it out with our next campaign and see how accurately it reports online conversation.

But It’s Not Google?

bingLogo_reverse_lg

Everyone’s been talking about Bing, the search engine created by Microsoft.  Some love it, some hate it, but to help you decide I recommend checking out www.bing-vs-google.com.  Seeing the results of your search split screen between the two search engines is a little addicting, but it’s a good way to decide for yourself which one you prefer without having to sift through the many, many, many reviews out there.

If you find yourself traveling alone either for personal or for business trips and want to find a fellow travel mate, now you can!

Put in your travel dates and network with other travelers. Not only can this be a great way to start a new friendship, but it can also be a fantastic way to save money:

Airtroductions: Whether you’re looking for a date in Los Angeles, a business networking partner in Tokyo, or just someone to share a cab from Kennedy to Midtown, look no further.
